Plants That Keep Mosquitoes At Bay

The first of September may be this week bringing the fun feelings of fall and the soon-to-be end of summer, but that doesn't mean the mosquitoes got the message. In fact, we'll probably be seeing mosquitoes around for another month or more until a good cold front comes through. These pesky bugs swarm around just looking for the next victim to land on - leaving you with itchy bites. Who says you have to hibernate the rest of the season, though? There are a few plants that can be planted around your landscape to help ward off these vampire bugs so you can still enjoy your perfect backyard paradise!

Basil is one of the few herbs that you don't have to crush in order to reap the mosquito fighting benefits! Just having it growing around your space can help ward the pesky bugs away, plus, you can use the leaves in some amazing culinary dishes! Lemon basil and cinnamon basil are the best varieties for warding off the bugs.

While is may deter mosquitoes, it may also attract cats! You can grow this in close proximity to the areas you want to ward off mosquitoes, or you can even crush the leaves and apply them for even greater protection. Catnip is from the mint family.

It may seem pretty obvious since this is an ingredient listed in many mosquito repellents. The reason it works so well is because it will mask the attractant in your skin. You can have this grown in a garden space, or you can have it planted in pots and it will achieve the same goal.

Lavender not only smells wonderful and looks beautiful, it also helps keep mosquitoes and gnats away from your evening gathering! You can place pots of lavender around your patio, doors, and windows, and not only will it smell nice, but you won't notice as many pesky bugs. You can also keep the dried flowers in your closet to help warm off moths.

Lemon Balm

This plant is also known as horsemint, and the scent wards off mosquitoes while attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to your landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks. Be aware, though, it’s fast growing, drought resistant and reseeds itself, so consider planting in a pot rather than in your yard to avoid a lemon balm takeover.

If you thought these bright little flowers were just for making your Lake of the Ozarks landscape look pretty - think again! Marigolds are a natural mosquito repellent because of their distinct smell. You can plant them around your home to help keep them at bay, and especially have them planted around your outdoor living spaces!

5 Reasons to Hire a Lawn Maintenance Company

At Paradise Landscaping, we don't just create the most beautiful custom landscapes at the Lake of the Ozarks - we also maintain them as well. Landscape maintenance is a great way to take advantage of enjoying your lawn, without having to do the backbreaking work it takes to keep it looking so nice. At Paradise Landscaping, we provide many services, from irrigation maintenance to pool maintenance, but today we'd like to share a few reasons why you would love to have your lawn maintained by us.

You Can Trust The Experts

If you've ever tried to do any landscaping on your own, we're sure you realized not too long after starting that there is a lot involved. Not just in tools, but also in knowledge. You have to know the right time to plant when to water them, how to fertilize them, and even where in your landscaping to plant them. This also doesn't include the tools that you'll need to achieve the look you desire. At Paradise Landscaping, we have been creating and maintaining landscapes for over 80 combined years, and we bring that experience into your landscape every time we come to work on it.

Save Yourself The Time & Energy

Do you have a large yard? How long does it take you to mow your yard? This summer we've had a great combination of rain and sun, to create beautiful landscapes that are still green almost all the way through August - on the flipside, you won't get a break from mowing with this type of weather. Just because the weather has been wet, doesn't mean it's been cool, so we're sure you realized halfway through your yard that you still have a lot to go, and you're already dripping with sweat. Depending on the size of your yard, you could be mowing it every week, and it could take HOURS each time.

When you hire a yard maintenance team at the Lake of the Ozarks, we can save you time and energy by taking care of the basic needs of your yard for you. Now you can use that time to be doing what you love, instead of riding around in the sun all day.

Routine Care is Performed On Time

From irrigation maintenance to hedge trimming, there are a several maintenance needs that should be performed on a routine basis. If they aren't completed on time, you could find yourself with a tangled mess of bush branches and an irrigation system that isn't working properly. At Paradise Landscaping, Along with weekly mowing, trimming, and blowing off all hard surfaces, we offer a variety of services including turf treatments, tree & shrub fertilization, pruning maintenance, mulching, power washing, and home check up services.

Seasonal Maintenance Doesn't Go Undone

Every season has a different chore that must be completed if you want to keep your landscape looking lush. In the summer you have to make sure your plants are watered and trimmed appropriately. In the fall, you may want to reseed your yard, have your leaves raked up and disposed of, or even plant new trees. In the winter your landscape may go dormant, but that doesn't mean you won't have anything to do. If it snows or ices, you'll want to find someone who can remove these from your driveway so you can safely make your way to work. In the spring you'll want to be sure that everything is mulched, pruned, cleaned up from winter, and ready to spring up on time! There is no end to the chores that need to be accomplished, but when you hire a lawn maintenance service, we can take care of these for you.

It's A Good Investment

Finally, it's a good investment of your time and money. If you try to go at this on your own, not only will you have to buy all of the supplies, but you'll have the time invested in it. When you hire a lawn maintenance service, you can trust that we will bring the necessary supplies so they won't take up room in your garage, but we can also be much more efficient with our time because we've done this many times before and are less prone to accidents or mistakes.

FAQs About Water Features

Have you ever felt like your yard was lacking something? Most likely it's lacking a water garden! Water features have the wonderful ability to make your yard instantly feel like a spa and give you feelings of peace and relaxation. While they are beautiful to look at, they can seem intimidating if you've never had something like that before.

How much maintenance is involved with a water garden?

We can create a water feature that involves as much maintenance as you would like. From a few minutes a day if you have fish, to a few minutes a month. The best part is, you can have all of the joys of a water garden without the maintenance by hiring the best landscape maintenance company at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Will my water garden increase the mosquito population?

It will not. Water gardens are designed to be continually moving, and mosquitos don't lay their eggs in moving water, only stagnant. If something happens and your water garden needs repairs, give us a call so we can get it up and running quickly.

What size water garden should I build?

This is all based on your preference and the size of your yard. From small fountains to large gardens the sky is the limit with possibilities. We can't wait to see what you would like to do in your yard, and help you create the perfect paradise.

How long do water gardens last?

Water gardens are built to last when cared for properly. Pieces of your garden will need to be replaced occasionally. Sometimes the pumps or hoses fail, sometimes things may need to replace but in the end, your water feature is built to last.

Do my pumps need to be run continually?

You will want to keep them running for as long as you want to keep the water feature. Every water feature is different, though. If you have a fountain you can easily keep the water running, or turn it off. Be aware that when you turn it off, you are allowing water to sit, and this can be a breeding ground for bacteria and insects. If you have a water garden, you will want to keep it running continually unless you are winterizing it, in which case you'll be removing the water so it shouldn't affect the quality.

Why Should You Want a Custom Landscape?

I guess the real question is, why shouldn't you want a custom landscape? When you step outside on your porch for morning coffee or pull into your driveway in the afternoon, there's nothing better than seeing a nicely manicured lawn that was created just for you. At Paradise Landscaping, we realize that every landscape is different and that it just won't do to have a cookie cutter lawn. Here are a few reasons why you'll LOVE your custom landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks.

It's Unique to YOU

One of the best things about a custom landscape is that we can create anything your heart desires, within the limits of your land. Have you always wanted a garden that attracts birds and butterflies? We can add that to your space. If you entertain a lot and would like a space that matches your personality, we can create a custom firepit area with stone seating, and a perfect spot for the grill. Basically, the possibilities are endless, and we want YOUR input!

It Works For Your Yard

In many cases, landscapes need more than just pretty details added. Sometimes they need some major renovation done. Maybe water always gathers at the lowest spot of your yard and makes it impossible to grow grass there. Maybe the way your landscape lays, water is always rushing into your home and against your foundation. When you work with a landscaping company at the Lake of the Ozarks that does custom work, we can help you work around details in your yard that may be causing problems before making them pretty.

We Have the Experience

Rick Harris, our designer, has 46 years of experience in the field of Horticulture, Retail Garden Center Management, and Landscape Design. That's 46 years of learning and knowing what and how large plants will become. All of this experience assists Rick in developing hand drawn landscapes in full color ... these are the ultimate landscape designs. While he has kept up with the times, learning landscape design on computers and visual software, he still believes that the time-tested custom hand drawn designs are the best. His hand drawn designs show a personality and feel that the computerized designs do not.

Hire Paradise Landscaping

As Rick says, “no landscape design (and therefore the planting of that design) is a custom landscape design without the input of the client”. We know that we can create a much better landscape design for our clients if we can talk to them and get their ideas of what they want. So if you are interested in a landscape design that fits your home and lifestyle – call Rick for an appointment!
