How long should I run my pool pump?

How long you run your pool pump is determined by the piping size, pool size, and the swimmer load.  Typically, it's safe to run your pump for about one hour for every ten degrees of temperature, depending on the circulation speed of your pool.  The following are good rules of thumb for conventional, single speed pool pumps:
• Outdoor Pool – a minimum of 10-12 hours per day
• Indoor Pool – a minimum of 8 hours per day

How long should my pool filter run?

As your pool filter is the most important component in keeping your swimming pool clean and free of debris, it is ideal to run a filter all the time for maximum circulation and debris removal.  It is suggested that your filter system run at least 6-8 hours a day.  When the pool water temperature starts to climb above 80 degrees or so, it is recommended to run the system 8-12 hours a day.

How do I know when to clean my pool filter?

The pool filter plays an important role in keeping your pool sanitary.  There are different kinds of pool filters and they each require regular cleaning - the more you use your pool the more often it will probably need to be cleaned.  One sign that you may need to clean your pool filter is if you notice an increase in flow between the pressure gauge and flow meter.  If you have questions regarding what type of pool filter your pool has, contact a professional pool maintenance company to give you further cleaning instructions.

Do I need to drain my pool every year?

It is not recommended that you drain your pool, especially during the winter months.  By keeping water in the pool during the winter, you can actually protect the bottom of your pool from cracking during freezing temperatures.  However, it is recommended that you use a pool cover during the off-season (months your pool is not in use) to protect the pool from debris and cold temperatures.

How do I know if my pool has too much chlorine in it?

Keeping the right chemical levels in your pool allows for safe and healthy swimming all season long.  Not enough chlorine or chemicals can leave your pool susceptible to bacteria, and too many chemicals can cause harmful effects.  If your pool water looks cloudy, it could mean there is too much chlorine in it.  Too much chlorine in your pool could cause the following:
Skin irritation and dryness for swimmers
Dry hair, and hair that appears greenish in color for blonde-haired swimmers
Red and irritated eyes for swimmers
If you are unsure about the chlorine levels in your pool, it's best to call a professional pool maintenance company at the Lake of the Ozarks and consult with them.
