6 Landscaping Resolutions for 2016

Every new year can be an inspiring way to take a look at our lives and make important changes. One valuable change that you can make in your life is to spend more time outside. Breathing large amounts of fresh air every day is a great way to improve your health. You can also get vitamin D from the sun, and that can help improve skin, sleep patterns, bone density and more. One of the greatest gifts you could give yourself this year is a backyard paradise where you can enjoy all of the benefits of the outdoors.

Create Outdoor Living Areas

From patios to porches there are many wonderful ways we can create an outdoor space for you that will encourage you to want to stay outside. If your outdoor areas only consist of a bench or two scattered around your yard, we can help. Our custom landscape designer at the Lake of the Ozarks can create a design based off your needs and desires for your space.

Improve Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting doesn't just create a nice ambiance. It can greatly improve safety and visibility in your landscape. We are a preferred vendor for Kichler LED lighting systems. They have many models and units that are perfect for lighting your stairs, gardens, water features, sidewalks and more. Make 2016 the year that you light up your outdoor spaces, making them more enjoyable in the evenings, as well as safer.

Put New Grass In the Yard

If you've ever looked out on your lawn, and regretfully noticed the bad patches of your yard, 2016 may be the time to fix it. We can put new seed in your yard, or lay patches of grass to help alleviate the look.

Incorporate Decorative Rocks and Boulders

Take advantage of 2016, and make it the year that you take your landscape to the next level. By adding rocks and boulders to your landscape, we can help you make your space even more visually appealing. Rocks can be many different shapes, sizes, and colors, and the benefit to having them added to your landscape is that if you change your mind later they are easily moved elsewhere.

Create New Paths with Pavers and Stone

Creating new pathways and entertainment areas with stone patios is a great way to take 2016 up a notch. Whether you have us create a new fire pit with plenty of spaces to spread out and enjoy the glow, or a grilling area where you can impress your friends with your skills, stone is a great option. It's also less likely to be slick when it's wet, so it's a wonderful choice no matter what the weather.

Get Regular Maintenance for Your Yard

The final resolution you can make for your yard this year is to commit to getting regular maintenance. Our team of landscapers at the Lake of the Ozarks can handle any size yard, and we'll keep your grass mowed, sidewalks cleared, bushes trimmed and more. We can even take care of power washing and home check up services. Let our team take care of your landscape maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Let the new year be your chance to make your backyard a paradise. When you hire us to create your landscape, we will custom design it based on your needs and wants for your space. After your landscape has been created, we can continue to maintain it and keep it looking fabulous. Give us a call today and start tackling one resolution at a time!

Whether you want a white Christmas or not, one of the best ways to enjoy time with family is in the great outdoors. Paradise Landscaping specializes in creating a paradise in your very own backyard that you can enjoy no matter what the season or holiday. Check out a few ways you can enjoy Christmas with or without the snow!

With Snow

There are so many winter wonderland activities that you can enjoy with your family through the Christmas season when there is snow on the ground. Here are a few of our favorites ways you can spend time in your custom designed landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks in the snow!

  • Snow Painting - Put some water and food coloring in a spray bottle and paint the snow!
  • Build Snow Forts and Start a Snow War
  • Shovel paths in the Snow
  • Go Sledding
  • Make Snow Angels
  • Build a GIANT Snowman or a Snow Family
  • Go on a Winter Scavenger Hunt - Make a list including many items you may only find in the winter: pine cones, snowflakes, ice-sicles,  animal tracks in the snow, and more.

Without Snow

Currently, the weather is predicting  a low of 47°, and now snow. Though Missouri can surprise us on the morning of December 25th, it's also a good idea to make plans that don't include a snowy morning. Here are a few activities that you and your family can enjoy that can be just as fun as pelting each other with snowballs.

  • Build a Bonfire and Make S'mores
  • Feed the Birds or go Birdwatching
  • Set Up and Outdoor Obstacle Course for your Kids or pets
  • Make A Winter Sun Catcher with fruits, berries, twigs. Freeze it in a small pan, drill a hole and hang outside for the birds!

5 Ways to Spruce Up Your Landscaping for Any Holiday

With the seasons and the holiday's always changing, there are just so many decorations that you need to store to keep your outdoor paradise looking fabulous. Paradise Landscaping not only cares about your grass and bushes, but we also care that your porch and front door stay just as charming. Here are a few tips to keep your landscape always looking festive no matter what the season!

Deck the Door

Consider purchasing a plain wreath, made from any material. Then as the seasons change, you can add different accessories to it. Use ornaments at Christmas, snowflakes in the winter, beautiful flowers for Spring and Summer, and leaves in the Fall. This way you can use the same wreath, but make it look new every season.

Get Fiberglass Urns

Fiberglass urns are a great way to add character to the sides of your front door, the bottoms of your porch steps, or around your garage door. You can add different plants and flowers to the urns throughout the season to keep them looking fresh and updated. By purchasing staple additions to your decorating collection, you can save yourself from having to buy all new pieces every season.

Use Faux Boxwoods

Faux trees can add a height dimension in your decorating. You can also decorate these trees through the seasons, or save them for only a few. You can put them on your porch, around your front steps, or around windows to add a fun splash of color.

Battery Operated Candles

Putting real candles outside may be pretty, but it's also expensive and dangerous. Purchase some nice battery operated candles in different heights that you can use to accent your outdoor tables, your porch steps and more.

Accessories for the Seasons

Finally, start collecting accessories for all of your staple pieces! Ornaments, flowers, candles, butterflies, Fall leaves, and lights are all wonderful pieces that you can interchange through the seasons. They are also much easier to store than permanently decorated wreaths, trees and more.

Protect Your Landscape From Wintry Weather

Winter wonderland could be just around the corner, and with that comes possible hazards to your landscape. Whether your new trees will be at risk from the harsh temperatures, or your Lake of the Ozarks landscape is in danger from the high levels of salt that will be spread, we want to make sure that you know who to call to keep your yard looking fabulous. Here are a few things that you can do, and we can help with, to keep your yard thriving through the winter.

Inspect Newly Planted Trees

If you find a crack in the landscape, be sure to fill it quickly with earth. Cracks can expose the sensitive root systems to the harsh weather.

Water The Landscape Heavily

Did you know that moist soil holds more heat than dry soil? If you water you plants before a frost, it will not only give them the moisture they need but prevent the front from penetrating as deeply! If you need help with any maintenance, Paradise Landscaping is the best landscape maintenance team at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Wrapping Plants and Small Trees

Below freezing temperatures can be especially hard on your plants, bushes and trees. After we've cared for your backyard paradise all summer, we want to make sure that your landscape continues to stay safe through the winter as well. Add extra protection from the wind and cold by wrapping them in burlap or frost protection fabric.

Pruning Tree Branches

Pruning your trees in the winter is important because of the heavy snow and ice that we can receive. The extra weight can cause branches to break, which will hurt the tree in the long run. If you have any questions about pruning, be sure to contact a professional.

Preparing for Wind

The wind can be one of the especially damaging traits of winter. Make sure that all potted plants, outdoor furniture, awnings and other items are stored or secured safely through the winter.

Protecting Plants From Salt

The salt that is used for your sidewalks can cause damage to your plants. If any of your plants are in an area that is at risk, you can cover them with burlap for extra protection.

Best Landscape Company at the Lake of the Ozarks

Even though summer is long gone, Paradise Landscaping has been busy not only prepping your yard for the winter but preparing landscapes for an even better next year! This is still a good time to start construction projects and major landscape renovations. We can create a custom design based on the needs of you and your yard, and get started in time to have it ready for summer.  If you've always dreamed of having a custom designed landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks paradise, give us a call!

Benefits to Planting Trees In YOUR Paradise

Trees can be a wonderful advantage to your outdoor paradise. From the shade they provide to the way they filter the air and water, there are many reasons to incorporate trees into your custom designed landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks. Here are just a few reasons to plant trees in your yard any time of the year.

Trees Are Energy Savers

The US Department of Agriculture has found that a young healthy tree can provide a net cooling effect equivalent to ten room-sized air conditioners for over 20 hours a day. That could produce amazing savings for your home if you have just ONE nice tree in your yard. Not to mention, when they are placed strategically in your yard, they can provide and even better service to you. Studies have shown that if a tree is planted on the western side of your home it can reduce your energy bill up to 3 percent in five years, and almost twelve percent in fifteen years! If your trees are planted on the North and West side of your home, it can protect your home against cold winter winds as well.

Trees Benefit the Environment

Trees can not only produce savings on your energy bill, but they can also make the environment cleaner. Trees absorb gasses like nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Trees can also convert carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis. To put it in more relative terms, one tree can clean about 330 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air each year, which can provide enough oxygen for a family of four! The roots of a tree can also filter groundwater and can help control runoff and erosion by holding the soil in place.

Landscape Maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks

It's important to not only plant more trees but care for the ones we have. You can protect your trees by caring for your landscape, and having them pruned correctly. Of course, more trees can also mean more maintenance for your yard. Make sure to call Paradise Landscaping for all of your landscape maintenance needs. We can keep your bushes trimmed, sidewalks clear, and rake and dispose of the leaves from your trees. Give us a call today and see how we can help make your yard a paradise!

5 Tips to Improve Your Home's Exterior for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is here and if you will be hosting the celebrations this year, you'll want to spruce up the outside of your home first. It's natural that you spend time cleaning the inside of our home for guests, but the outside is the first thing people will see and notice as they pull into your driveway. Take a few minutes to look at your home with new eyes, and you'll notice that these things will need to be done, not just for looks, but also for the safety of your guests.

Sweep Your Sidewalks

Keeping your sidewalks clean is a must. If there are any dips, cracks or holes in your sidewalk, piles of leaves and sticks that haven't been swept off will hide these - making it dangerous for guests. If you already have snow in your area, you'll want to make sure that your sidewalk has been properly cleaned and salted to prevent anyone from falling.

Rake and Remove Your Leaves

The leaves look fun and seasonal when they first fall, but after a few weeks of wind, rain and sun - they start to make your yard look unkempt. The sooner you have the leaves raked and removed the better. If you don't have time to do this, don't forget to call the best lawn maintenance team at the Lake of the Ozarks! We can take care of leaf removal, and cleaning off your hardscapes.

Clean Your Gutters

After the leaves have fallen, one of the most important tasks is to remove the leaves out of your gutters. The appearance can be haphazard, and it can be a hazard for your guests. If it's raining and your gutters are full, the rain water will have nowhere to go except down onto your guests.

Wash Your Windows

This chore is easier in the Spring, but after Summer and Fall you can find spider webs, leaves, and dirt. A clean set of windows can make the entirety of your home look clean and organized from the outside - in!

Add Some D├ęcor

Nothing can spruce up your home more than adding a little Thanksgiving cheer! Whether you decide to go the extra mile and get your Christmas lights up, or you just add a pretty wreath to your door - this decision can make a beautiful impact.

Lake of the Ozarks Landscape Maintenance

You can't do everything by yourself, so make sure and call the team who can do an excellent job for you! From mulching and raking to fertilizing and mowing - the Paradise Landscaping team can make your yard look fabulous on a routine basis. When you schedule routine maintenance on your yard, you'll never have to be afraid of holidays, or a friend who decides to "drop in" unannounced, seeing it in disrepair. Let our team take care of the dirty work, so you can enjoy the fun!

3 Reasons YOUR Yard Could Be Flooding

Rainy days can remind you of home improvement projects that you didn't even know you needed, and they're not very friendly reminders either. Discovering leaks in your basement and flooding in your yard are not fun, but they do bring to mind what you need to add to your to-do list. Paradise Landscaping and Maintenance can help you with these projects, and fix them for the long term.

If your yard is flooding, and with that your basement as well, here are a few reasons this flooding is caused, and how the best landscape company at the Lake of the Ozarks can help!

Your Gutters are Full

Now that most of the leaves have fallen from the trees, they will end up in the most unconvenient locations, like your yard and your gutters. This can be a prime cause of flooding, especially during this time of year. Your gutters are in place to direct the water to better locations, but when they're full, they block up the water and cause it to spill out where you don't want it. Get those gutters cleaned, and you may begin to notice less flooding around the base of your home. Additionally, if you still have leaves in your yard, we offer the best leaf removal at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we'd be glad to come get them out of your yard. You can check out our previous post to learn why you REALLY need to remove those leaves!

Your Drains Need to Be Directed Away From Your Home

This can be a very simple fix, with great results. If your gutters are clear, and they're working properly, they will be directing the water to the drain. If your drain doesn't head away from the home, though, it can be causing even more trouble. There are simple solutions at many home improvement stores for guiding the water away from your home.

Your Yard Needs Landscaped

When your yard hasn't been landscaped, you will have uneven areas of your yard that could be draining this rainwater right to your home. When the foundation of your home is left to soak in water, it can cause larger damages, not to mention it can also be a prime culprit in basement flooding. Our team can come take a look at your yard, the elevation, and which directions the water could be running. We can utilize garden beds, retaining walls, and other measures to re-direct the water where it won't cause damage.

Improve YOUR Yard with the Best Landscapers at the Lake of the Ozarks

While your yard can be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, it can also direct water away from your home. From creating a custom designed yard that works well with your family and your needs to landscape maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks, we want to make your outdoor areas the best they can be. 5 Easy Ways to Update Your Front Door

When you've walked through the same front door for weeks, months or years, sometimes it needs an update. Changing the look of your door can add an entirely new look to your home, without requiring a large investment. From changing the color of the door to updating the landscape around your door, here are a few tips that can make the front of your home look like new!

If you decide to try something new and choose a brand new color, you'll have many different colors to pick from! Here are six popular colors to consider when you re-paint your door:

Put Out New Decor or Greenery

Adding or updating the greenery around your door can instantly update the appearance. You can add standing topiary's to either side of your door, or you can also add flower baskets or small bushes. You can update the wreath on your door with something seasonal, or with something new that catches your eye. If you want a cost effective way to change the look of your door, you can update the mat! This will add a splash of color and style while not requiring a budget.

Accessorize with Numbers, a Mailbox, and Lights

Your door can always use a little bit of accessorizing! Adding a house number to your door can be a fun update, with many styles, colors, and materials that you can choose from. If you live in town, where a mailbox on your door is necessary, you can update the style, or even repaint it to add some excitement. You can also consider adding new lighting to your front door. Do You REALLY Need to Remove the Leaves from Your Yard?

The simple answer is yes. Even though the leaves look nostalgic, and keep the look of Fall alive - your yard depends on you. There are plenty of excuses for why to not rake your leaves, perhaps you want to wait until they ALL fall from the trees, or maybe it just keeps raining, or you lost your rake, but all the same, the leaves still need to be raked. Here are a few reasons you need to rake your yard, and how we can help make it easier on you!

Why Should I Remove the Leaves?

Just so you know, the reason you rake the leaves isn't because your neighbors do it - it's because it helps your yard. Did you know that your yard needs to breathe? Your landscape needs that breath of fresh air to keep it from suffocating under a layer of thick and sometimes soaking leaves. Not to mention that when the snow starts to fall, if your leaves are still on the ground you can accumulate a "snow mold". With leaves still being on the ground, you've given the environment everything it needs (moisture, food, sunshine) to create a variety of fungus that will not be good in the future.

How Should I Remove the Leaves?

One way to get this Fall foliage off of your yard is through the backbreaking task of raking. Another option is to get a leaf blower and blow them all into a pile. Both options leave you with the responsibility of disposing of the leaves appropriately. You can make this a family event, where everyone grabs their rakes and gets to work, or you can call the team who can take care of it for you!

Leaf Removal at the Lake of the Ozarks

Our team can help you not only with leaf removal and collection, but also with the disposal of those leaves. We are your one stop shop for all of your landscaping needs at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we are proud to help you with this very important aspect. Don't feel pressured to find the right tools that you'll only use a few days of the year, and then spend hours raking your leaves. We have everything ready, and the knowledge of what to do with those leaves afterwords.

Paradise Landscaping at the Lake of the Ozarks

What YOU Need to Know About Retaining Walls

When you're creating a beautiful landscape design at the Lake of the Ozarks, one of the biggest things you shouldn't forget is your retaining walls. This feature of a landscape doesn't sit at the front of your mind, and can even go unnoticed - but their value is extremely important. When you live in the Ozarks, the value of a retaining wall is even more important with the sloping terrain and clay soil that we have.

Whether you know all about retaining walls - or you haven't ever noticed them, we have a few interesting things to share with you about this important landscape fixture.

What is a Retaining Wall?

A retaining wall is a structure that is used to hold soil behind it. A retaining wall can be made out of many different types of materials such as concrete blocks, poured concrete, treated timbers, rocks or boulders. There can be variances in the types of wall, how easy they are to install, and their lifespan - but the purpose is the same: retain soil.

Types of Retaining Walls

Gravity Walls - this type is perfect for small retaining walls, since they're not usually built to exceed four foot tall. It will rely on it's weight to resist the pressure of the force behind it.

Cantilever Retaining Walls - these are single-layered walls that are built in uniform thickness with its base. They're capable of holding significant amount of earth as well as supporting tall slopes.

Sheet Pile Retaining Walls - aka: piling retaining walls. This is a type of wall that is usually used on soft soils where there is not enough space for wide barriers. Generally, 2/3 of the material is hammered below the soil depending on the landscape.

Anchored Retaining Walls - these are similar to the piling retaining walls because it utilizes cables for extra strength.

Counterfort Retaining Walls - this type of retaining wall is similar to cantilever walls, but it's built with thin vertical concrete webs (counterfort) which are at regular intervals on the rear side of the wall. They connect the wall's top and base together which lessens the shear force and bending moments cause by the earth.

Do I Need a Retaining Wall?

This is something we can help you decide. Before starting your custom landscape design at the Lake of the Ozarks, we will do a walk through in your yard. During the walk through we'll find out what you would like to see happen with the design of your yard, and what will be possible in the design. At this point, we'll be able to tell you if a retaining wall is necessary. A few ways you'll know if you need one is if you need to control downhill erosion. You may also want one if your foundation is threatened by a sliding hill, or if your foundation is beginning to wash away. Sometimes they aren't just functional, but beautiful, so a retaining wall can be used to create flowerbeds.

Creating a Custom Backyard Paradise

Whether you need a retaining wall or not, one thing you may want to consider is having your yard professionally landscaped. This is the perfect time of year to get your flowers, bushes and bulbs updated for the spring season. It's also the perfect time of year to start on these construction projects in your yard. The weather is nicer and the ground is easy to work with. If you are planning on any types of landscaping in your yard, call the team you can trust to get the job done right. We'll help you create your dream oasis at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks.

Landscape Lighting

Summer may be drawing to a close, but there's no better time to consider landscape lighting at the Lake of the Ozarks than now. With the cool brisk evenings, you'll probably still enjoy sitting out in your personal backyard paradise to watch the stars, or enjoy a bonfire. With the evenings getting darker faster though, having appropriate lighting for your walkways and yard is a necessity. Aside from being extremely important, landscape lighting is also extremely beautiful and a perfect way to set the mood. Here are five types of landscape lighting that will perfectly accent your yard.

Decorative Path and Spread Lights

Path & Spread Lighting adds beauty and functionality that illuminates your outdoor walkways and spaces. Tastefully crafted and constructed to endure the elements, Landscape Path & Spread Lights add style, value and safety.

Low Profile Hardscape Lights

This lighting is unique in the fact that it can be hidden into your hardscapes and walls. It's low profile design is meant to shed light on paths, gardens and walls without attracting attention to the style or design of the fixture itself.

Water Feature Lights

6 Ornamental Grasses for Your Yard

When we design your landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks, we put a lot of thought into what would be perfect in your yard. Not just what would look perfect, but also what will be perfect for your paradise. Every plant has a different requirement for surviving, and luckily for you - we know how to make them not just survive but thrive. Ornamental grass is  a gorgeous way to add dimension to your yard, here are a few neat ones to consider for when we start designing your yard.

Feather Reedgrass

This is an extremely popular ornamental grass. This plant has dark green leaves and narrow, tan plumes in the early summer. It generally grows upright, giving an architectural element to landscapes even in the winter. There are even tiny flowers in the early summer.

Ravennagrass

This is also called pampas grass. It is a large and fast-growing perennial that will draw your attention when it's in flower because of it's height. It can add a nice dramatic flair to your Lake of the Ozarks landscape. It can also hide an unsightly view.

Northern Sea Oats

This is a fast spreading species and is loved for its seed heads. The way they hang off the stems makes them look like bronze colored wind chimes. They can also be used fresh or dried in arrangements.

Cordgrass

It's a spreading prairie that thrives in damp soils. It's a great choice around water.

Fountaingrass

A mounding plant with a pretty shape. It's name refers to the graceful spray of late-summer plumes of fuzzy flowers. Plumes can be white, pink or red, and the colors continue into Fall, which brings a beautiful and informal look to your landscape. This grass can self seed, so be sure to call your favorite landscape maintenance team to come in and make sure this won't take over in an invasive way.

Blue Fescue

This variety of ornamental grass is the smallest of the grasses. It's perfect for many different areas in your landscaping. It can go at the base of shrubs, or in rows, or really anywhere! It looks best in early summer when it's a beautiful bluish color.

Custom Landscape Design At the Lake of the Ozarks

We specialize in making your yard a custom creation. No cookie cutter layouts, or pre-planned designs! We take a look at your yard and then determine what will look best and work best for you, your lifestyle and your landscape. After that we create a hand sketched design of your yard with the plants and grasses we believe would go well - and this process involves your input! In fact, our designer, Rick Harris, says that "no landscape design (and therefore the planting of that design) is a custom landscape design without the input of the client”. We know that we can create a much better landscape design for YOU if we can talk to you and get your ideas of what you want. Are you ready to start the journey to a custom created paradise in your very own yard? Call Rick at 573-964-6515 to get the design process started!
