Protect Your Landscaping This Fourth of July

You've worked all summer to keep your lawn looking beautiful, and then Fourth of July comes around. Between you and the kids there are burns marks and colorful smoke rings from the smoke bombs all around the yard and sidewalks. If you wish every year that you would take more preventative measures, then this is the year to start!

At Paradise Landscaping, we want to help you take care of your lawn all year long, even when the fireworks start popping. Here are a few tips to help keep your yard damage free this year for Fourth of July.

Pick the Right Spot

When you're lighting your own fireworks, it's important to make sure that you pick a safe location in your yard. You want to keep ground-based fireworks about 30 feet away from everything, and aerial products should be at least 100 feet away. You don't want to light fireworks in any area that is covered in tall dry grass that could be flammable, and you don't want to put them in a space where sparks could fly and hit something like a house, shed, animals, propane tanks, or electricity.

Put Down Protection

One of the best ways to protect your landscape is by putting down a large flat board to light the fireworks from. This will make it less likely that the shooting sparks will land in your yard, creating a dark, burnt spot where you were lighting them. The same applies if you'll be lighting fireworks on a sidewalk. You can protect your area from unsightly marks by putting a large piece of wood down. Make sure that what you use does not have flammable fibers sticking off of it.

Keep Water Nearby

Always keep a bucket of water nearby when you are lighting fireworks. This is for two purposes, one, you can put out fires quickly if something gets out of hand, but you can also dunk fireworks into the water when they are done to make sure that any flames are completely out.

Supervise Children

There's something about fireworks that leaves so many kids in awe. The glowing sky just fills them with wonder, but it also makes the curious and excited to get out there and try it themselves. There are plenty of fireworks that are safe for children, but they should be handled appropriately for safety's sake. Make sure children are always supervised, and store fireworks in a place that kids can't get to on their own. Teach them about fire safety and making sure that flames are completely out before discarding leftover fireworks.

Make Clean Up Safe

The morning after Fourth of July can lack it's luster when you realize that you need to clean up all of the papers and exploded pieces from the fireworks. Make sure that nothing has a chance of rekindling before placing in a bag, and if you have larger fireworks, you can place them in a bucket of water overnight to make sure they are completely snuffed out. The same can apply for those dud fireworks. After you've given them ample time to go off, and they haven't, place them in the bucket of water just to be sure that nothing will rekindle accidentally and go off when least expected.

Establish Your Turf Against the Heat

In the heat of the summer, you may start to realize that your grass is looking a little wilty, and if you don't want to spend the time watering, it may help to find a drought tolerant grass! It's best to plant your grass in the spring and summer, but we just thought we'd plant a little seed if you will for when the perfect planting time comes. If you want to see a change in the overall look of your landscape, the first thing is to call the best landscape company at the Lake of the Ozarks, the second is to think about reseeding your lawn. Here are a few kinds of grass that are low-maintenance, but also great for weathering the summer.

Zoysia Grass

This grass grows beautifully and has a fine to medium textured leaf with a thick cushiony feel of lush carpet. Don't let the beauty of it fool you, though, it's a touch grass and actually required less mowing, watering and very few chemicals to survive. It's an eco-friendly choice, and instead of growing tall it tends to spread out wide creating a dense sod. It's a resilient and persistent grass that can be successfully grown in a variety of climates and conditions.

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass can be a wonderful choice because it is drought resistant, grows on many soils and makes a great turf if it's fertilized and taken care of properly. The only downside is that it does produce seed heads which can be unsightly, but that doesn't stop people from using this type of grass on their lawn. It can commonly be found in sports fields, parks, golf courses, and general utility turfs, and can grow in a variety of climates.

Buffalo Grass

This grass is actually native to North America, and it's tolerance to prolonged droughts and extreme temperatures make it a great choice. It spreads by surface runners, or stolons, and seed. It forms a fine textured, relatively thin turf with a soft blue-green color.

While this is a cool season grass, it is shade tolerant and will perform well in areas where the season is too hot for other cool grasses. You'll also find that fescue can be blended with other grass types. If you live in an area where the transition between spring, summer, fall, and winter can be a bit dramatic, this is a great option for you.

5 Ways to Create a Peaceful Backyard

Can you step into your backyard and find solace and peace from the outside world? Does your landscaping produce feelings of peace, comfort, relaxation and the feeling that you've gotten away to a special paradise? If your yard doesn't bring these feelings to you, then it's time to get it updated! There are many benefits to spending time outside, and one of the main ways you'll enjoy being outside is by having a place to enjoy it! Here are five ways we can help you create a peaceful backyard!

Creating a Space

If you don't have a space already created, you won't use it. This is almost a law of nature, and since we like to obey the law, we're very supportive of creating a space that you can enjoy! Think about your lifestyle, and what you enjoy doing. This will help you choose what you want to focus on in your backyard paradise. Do you entertain a lot of friends and need a place where you can all gather and enjoy some meat grilled outside, or hang out around a warm firepit? When imagining your perfect outdoor space do you think of a place where your pet can freely run around while you kick back in a hammock reading a book and listening to nature? This will be just what we need to create a custom landscape at the Lake of the Ozarks just for you!

Fill Your Space With the Right Stuff

When creating a backyard paradise, it's important to fill your space with just the right plants. If you would like to create a place where you can listen to the birds sing and watch butterflies flit through your yard, than we'll know to incorporate many beautiful blooms, flowers filled with nectar, and even trees where birds can find shelter. If you have severe allergies, we'll know to cut down on the large clusters of decorative grass, and find plants that don't pollenate as much. If you hate mowing your lawn, don't worry, we can still plant grass, you'll just need to hire the best lawn maintenance company at the Lake of the Ozarks to keep the lawn trimmed!

Just Add Water

Have you ever noticed that the sound of falling water can instantly relax you and bring you to a state of peace that you didn't notice before? Water has a way of doing that, which is why you'll find that many peaceful locations you enjoy feature water in some way. At Paradise Landscaping we can create a water feature that will not only look beautiful, but also match your lifestlye. If you want a very low-key, maintenance free water feature, we can install something that matches what your needs are, but still keeps the upkeep easy. If you want a pond that you can keep fish in, we can create a beautiful area with waterfalls, ponds and sitting areas so you can enjoy the fullness of this space.

Increase Privacy

Increasing the privacy in your yard can take the peacefullness to a whole new level. If you are constantly staring and the highway behind your home, or the neighbors who don't mow their lawn, or even just the neighbors while they're having a grill out - it can decrease your sense of peace. When you have a spot that feels secluded, private and serene, you'll be more apt to get out and use it.

Use Natural Elements

The use of natural stones, rock, wood, and plants can increase the peaceful feeling of your landscape. The more of nature that you incorporate into your designs, the more peaceful and serene your space will become. If you don't know what you want to use, or even how to start, we can help! Our designer, Rick Harris, knows just what to incorporate to create a place that you'll love.

BONUS: Hire a Maintenance Crew to Maintain This Newly Found Paradise

If you want to know our biggest secret to increasing the feeling of peace in your backyard, we suggest hiring someone to do all of the maintenance. There's nothing like coming home to a yard that is freshly cut, without having to do any of the work! Hire the best landscapers at the Lake of the Ozarks, and then let US take care of the maintenance for you. It's going to be the best arrangement you've ever done. Pet Proofing Your Landscape

At Paradise Landscaping, we create custom landscapes at the Lake of the Ozarks so that you have a perfect paradise to love and enjoy. We realize that a huge part of your family could be cute little Fido and that sometimes, your furry friend can be hard on your lawn. We love him as much as you do, and that's why we're providing you with some great tips to keep your lawn looking fresh and safe for your pet at the same time.

Dogscaping Your Yard

This is an actual term, and it implies exactly what you think it does - creating a space that is safe for your dog. You don't have to do any major renovations or attach a huge price tag to creating this safe space, and with a little help from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks Landscapers, your space will be safe in no time.

Protect the Grass

Your grass may be at risk when you have a dog, especially if you have a dog run where they continually apply wear and tear to a very specific area in your yard. You'll want a hearty grass that can stand up to the constant running back and forth.

Pet urine can also be a factor when your landscape starts looking "ruff." The highly concentrated levels of nitrogen and soluble salts can have a burn effect on lawns. You can keep this to a minimum by washing or spraying the area down with water to help dilute the concentration.

If your landscape is showing signs of wear and tear, you can always call Paradise Landscaping. We'll come out and take a look at your landscape and help you work towards creating a green space with fewer patches.

Planting Pet-Safe Plants

While dogs and cats primarily eat meat, there are occasions where they will eat grass and other plants in your yard. When this happens, you'll want to make sure that the plants you have are not harmful to your pet. You will also want to let us know that you have pets when we start to landscape your yard so that there won't be any chance of us adding something that would be dangerous for them. Here are a few plants and mulches that you want to avoid when you have pets.

  • Daffodil
  • Lily
  • Morning Glory
  • Oleander
  • Sago Palm
  • Cocoa Mulch
  • Pine, Cedar & Hemlock Mulch
  • Rubber Mulch

Landscapes & The Digging Dog

Does your furry friend just LOVE to get out and tear through the dirt looking for animals, insects, or buried toys? We don't blame them! This is a wonderful pastime that dogs are known for, but if you want a beautiful landscape, you'll have to find ways to convince your pet that they would rather dig somewhere else. Some pet owners have found that a large dirt or sandbox specifically for digging enjoyment has helped ease the need for your dog to dig in your flower bed. You can also opt for larger, heavier duty metal landscape edging. This may help keep the mulch in the garden bed, and not your landscape.

Beautiful Landscapes at the Lake of the Ozarks

At Paradise Landscaping, we know how important your landscape and your pet are to you, and that's why we will help you create a landscape that works with both. We've been creating Lake of the Ozarks landscapes for over 5 years now, and we are proud to continue working with you to create a landscape that will look beautiful for years.
