The Hard Facts of Hardscapes

While there are many aspects of your landscaping that can't be done in the winter like planting, growing, and even some maintenance - winter is a great time to focus on your hardscapes! Every landscape is made up of hardscapes and softscapes and the key is to use them both in your landscape to make the most your space. Here are a few things you need to know about hardscapes and how you can incorporate them into your landscape.

What is a Hardscape?

A hardscape is anything in your landscape that is not living - so think wood, stone, metal and concrete. You can include structures, walkways, fun features and more. At Paradise Landscaping, we know how important these aspects of your landscaping are, and that's why we want to help you achieve your goals now so that when it warms up we can help you focus on the soft scapes and living aspects of your landscape.

Patios

Patios provide an excellent place to entertain your family and friends. They are basically an extension of your home, adding a place to sit back, relax, entertain, eat and more. The benefit to patios is that there are many building materials you can use to achieve the perfect look for your backyard paradise. From wood and stone to brick and concrete - the sky is the limit (literally!). A patio creates a foundation for outdoor living - a place you will love forever.

Fire Features

This is a very popular trend for landscapes today because it can provide a cozy place to relax. Whether you're adding it to your home for your own enjoyment, or because it can increase the value of your home when you sell it, upgrading your Lake of the Ozarks landscape with a fire feature is a great choice. There are many materials you can use like river rock, stacked stones, fieldstone, concrete, limestone and more. You can also choose different fuel sources for your outdoor hotspot like wood or propane. Sometimes gas can be a practical fuel, but you'll have to have a gas line installed.

Decks

Your deck is basically a room with a view. They provide the same type of enjoyment as a patio - but higher up. They can provide a beautiful vantage point where you can appreciate your landscape from a whole new perspective. You can have your deck created out of many types of materials, with wood being the most popular. You can also try pressure-treated decking, which can come with a warranty against decay and termite damage. There is also composite decking, which is made from wood and plastic particles.

Water Features

Water can add unprecedented relaxation. The sound of water instantly creates a calming atmosphere where you can escape to enjoy your space. Water is also a great way to help cancel out noises that surround you and you want to cancel out such as busy roads or local industries. You can create bold features or demure, understated waterscapes. As well as build it with many different types of materials.

Landscape vs. Snow - How to Win Against Winter

Old Man Winter has already begun his snowball fight with us this year, and your landscape is probably taking the brunt of the loss. While snow isn't always the culprit, ice, cold, and wind certainly are. The weight of ice can be damaging to trees when it builds up, and cold winds certainly don't do your trees and bushes any favors. Some experts are predicting a mild winter, you never know what's going to happen. Here are a few ways you can help keep the winter from damaging your hard earned landscape and have it ready to bloom in the spring.

Wrapping More Than Presents This Year

Did you know that burlap wraps for your trees and bushes are a great way to protect them from the harsh winter elements? Burlap allows your plants to breathe, while also retaining heat and protecting them from the cold wind. You can find wraps for your plants at a local garden center, and they come in many different materials like vinyl, burlap, or paper.

Protect the Roots

Some roots can be damaged by extreme cold. You can protect the roots of your plants by having them covered with 2-3 inches of mulch. This provides insulation but also helps to regulate sudden temperature changes - which seem to be common here in Missouri.

Protect Against Hungry Animals

While winter weather can be a large cause of damage to your plants, one of the biggest threats against your greenery is hungry creatures. The most common are the deer, but there are certain measures you can take to help keep them at bay. Getting a deer repellent can help keep them from munching on your bushes. Covering your plants doesn't just protect them from the cold, it can also protect them from hungry critters as well.

Deal with Debris

If any snow or ice builds up on your trees, it's important to treat them immediately. The weight of snow or ice can easily break the branches, which can not only cause damage to the tree but in some cases kill it.

Keep Your Sidewalks Cleared

This can be just as important as protecting your plants since you're protecting yourself and your guests. When you leave snow on your sidewalk, it can get packed down from traffic and then quickly get slick and hazardous. Thankfully, you can call the best landscape team at the Lake of the Ozarks to clear snow from your pathways, driveways, and parking lots.

Shrubs & Bushes for All Year Beauty

When you have your landscape designed at the Lake of the Ozarks by us, you get qualified landscapers who can provide you excellent results. One of the best reasons to work with us is because we can take what you want in your paradise and make it a reality. Let's say you want to see beauty all year long - there are specific plants that can be added to your landscape to accomplish this.

Here are a few shrubs we can add to your landscape to provide all year long beauty, and even when they aren't blooming - they can offer a striking contrast in your garden areas.

Spring

Azalea
If you would like a shrub in your landscape that can come in almost any color - this is the one! Not to mention you can get various size blooms as well. They like a lot of moisture, partial sun, and need a specific type of soil to grow. If you would like to see this in your paradise, we can find the perfect spot for it.

Bridal Wreath Spiraea
Along with spring comes spring weddings! So why not make your landscape feel like a wedding every day with beautiful flowering bushes. The Bridal wreath spiraea has tiny bunches of white flowers and they bloom before it leafs out - what a perfect way to welcome spring. It will be happiest in a sunny area and draining soil.

Brandywine
This shrub is a two-for-one because in the fall the glossy foliage darkens into maroon-red and in the spring it blooms with fresh white flowers. You will also find pink and blue clusters of berries during fall as it prepares to bloom in late spring. With partial sun requirements and moist soil, there are many places around you landscape that this plant will find perfect.

Summer

Mockorange
While the name may cause you to think that this bush blossoms in bright orange flowers - it actually boasts of fragrant and pure white flowers. You will be able to enjoy these for quite some time, as they last for weeks. The blooms will start to appear in late spring and early summer, and we will place it in an area of full sun.

Butterfly Bush
With a variety of colors available, like purple, white, blue, yellow, and pink - the beauty is unlimited. The blooms start to appear from the middle of the summer until the first frost, and because it's a summer plant it handles drought and heat well.

Fall

Petit Bleu, Sunshine Blue, Miss Sunshine
The blue and purple flowers on this plant start blooming in late summer and go until fall. They like a sunny location and will create a beautiful view in your paradise.

Kaleidoscope Abelia
When a background plant is needed, this is a great option. The evergreen variegated foliage is a perfect fall plant because the green leaves have splashes of gold and orange. Combine that with the white flowers, and you have a beautiful plant that brings joy for quite a while.

Harlequin Glorybower
White and purple-pink flower clusters and delicately nestled above the heart-shaped leaves. They bloom their best during the late summer and into the autumn season, and the leaves boast in a cream, sage green or deep green color.

Winter

Daphne Odora
The perfect plant for winter is an evergreen shrub. The Daphne Odora has beautiful clusters of fragrant pink flowers that bloom any time during midwinter to early spring. The flowers are surrounded by shiny dark green foliage that is tinged with golden edges. After the flowers fade, there are scarlet berries to replace them.

Rubella
The red buds that appear in winter make this a wonderfully festive shrub. It may even be the most colorful shrub in your garden once winter hits. The cones of flowers start to open in early spring so you can enjoy this shrub through the seasons.
